Can't Log Into OpenAI? Account Recovery Guide

Can't get into your ChatGPT or OpenAI account? The fix depends entirely on how you signed up. This guide covers every login method.

Step 1: Identify how you originally signed up

This is the most important step. If you signed up with Google, you must log in with Google — not email/password. If you signed up with Apple, you must use Apple. Mixing methods is the most common reason for "account not found" errors.

Try the auth methods in this order: Google, Apple, Microsoft, then email/password.

Email and password recovery

  1. Go to auth.openai.com and click "Forgot password".
  2. Enter your account email — check for typos.
  3. Check your spam folder for the reset email.
  4. If you don't receive it within 5 minutes, try an alternate email you may have used.
  5. Password reset links expire in 24 hours.

Google / Apple / Microsoft login issues

  1. Try logging in at auth.openai.com with the specific provider button — not email.
  2. If Google login fails: make sure you're logged into the correct Google account first.
  3. If Apple login fails: check that you haven't hidden your email from Apple — OpenAI may have your relay address.
  4. Clear your browser cookies for accounts.google.com or appleid.apple.com and try again.

Two-factor authentication (2FA) problems

  1. Make sure your device's clock is correct — TOTP codes are time-sensitive.
  2. Try your backup codes if you saved them during setup.
  3. If you've lost access to your 2FA device, contact support via help.openai.com — they can remove 2FA after identity verification.

If nothing works

Contact OpenAI support at help.openai.com with: your account email, approximate account creation date, and your subscription type. They can verify your identity and restore access. This process takes 2–5 business days.

My email says "no account found" — did my account get deleted?

Possibly, but more likely you signed up with a social login (Google/Apple) rather than email/password. Try those methods first before assuming the account is gone.

I can log in but my chat history is gone

Chat history is tied to your account. If you're in a new browser or incognito, you may not be logged in. If logged in and history is missing, it's a sync issue — wait a few minutes and refresh.
