Account Issues

OpenAI Account Banned? Here's What To Do

Your account was terminated — often with a generic email and no real explanation. OpenAI bans can feel arbitrary and their appeal system is not obvious. Here's the process that gives you the best chance of reinstatement.

What's happening

OpenAI terminates accounts for policy violations — but their automated system flags accounts with no human review first. Common triggers include: usage patterns that look like API reselling, suspicious login locations, content policy violations, payment fraud signals, or being caught in a sweep of accounts from a shared IP.

The generic termination email is sent automatically. It does not mean a human reviewed your account.

Before you appeal

  1. Read your termination email carefully — it may reference a specific policy. Find that policy at openai.com/policies.
  2. Check if any shared devices or networks could have caused the flag (office networks, VPNs, shared API keys).
  3. Do NOT create a new account while your appeal is pending — this will be detected and permanently close your case.
  4. Gather your account email, approximate date of creation, and your subscription/payment history.

How to submit an appeal

  1. Go to help.openai.com and open the chat bubble in the bottom right.
  2. Tell the bot: "I want to appeal an account termination."
  3. If routed to a form, fill it completely — vague appeals get rejected automatically.
  4. In your appeal message: state your account email, explain your legitimate use case with specifics, acknowledge any possible misuse pattern if relevant, and ask for a manual review.
  5. Submit once. Do not send multiple appeals — it flags your case as spam.

Appeal template that works

Subject: Account Termination Appeal — [your email]

I am writing to appeal the termination of my OpenAI account ([your email]).

My account was terminated on [date]. I have been a [free/Plus/Pro/API] user since [approximate date] and use OpenAI for [specific legitimate use — be detailed].

I have reviewed OpenAI's usage policies and do not believe my usage violated them. [If there's a possible flag: "I understand my usage may have triggered an automated flag because [reason], but I want to confirm this was legitimate use."]

I am requesting a manual review of my account activity. I am happy to provide any additional information needed.

Thank you for your time.

What to expect

Response times vary from 2 to 14 days. If you hear nothing after 7 days, post a follow-up in community.openai.com referencing your ticket number. Staff do monitor the forum and sometimes escalate cases there faster than the ticket queue.

The appeal success rate is low for clear policy violations. It is higher for accounts flagged by automation where no actual violation occurred.

If your appeal fails

If OpenAI denies your appeal and you believe it's in error, you can: file a complaint with the BBB (OpenAI responds to these), dispute charges with your credit card company if you were billed after termination, or post publicly on X/Twitter tagging @OpenAI with your ticket number — public cases sometimes get reviewed faster.

Frequently asked questions

Can I create a new account after being banned?

Not while your appeal is pending. OpenAI links accounts by device, email, and payment method. A new account while banned will likely be terminated and may permanently close your case.

How long does an OpenAI appeal take?

Typically 2–14 days. If you haven't heard back after 7 days, following up on community.openai.com with your ticket number sometimes speeds things up.

Will I get a refund if my account is banned?

Per OpenAI's terms, you may be entitled to a prorated refund for unused subscription time if your account was terminated without a policy violation. Include this in your appeal.
