Billing Issues
Charged by OpenAI Unexpectedly? How to Get a Refund
Unexpected charges from OpenAI are one of the top complaints on Trustpilot and the BBB. Whether you were billed after cancelling, charged twice, or don't recognise a charge — here's how to resolve it.
Common reasons for unexpected charges
OpenAI charges appear as "OPENAI" or "openai.com" on your statement. Common unexpected charges include: annual subscription auto-renewed, Plus plan charge after you thought you cancelled, API usage that exceeded your free tier, a team or business plan you didn't know was active, or a charge from a third-party app built on OpenAI's API (these come from the third party, not OpenAI directly).
Check your subscription first
- Log into chat.openai.com and click your profile → Manage Subscription.
- Check the billing date and plan type. Note the exact amount and date of the charge.
- If you see an active subscription you didn't expect, cancel it immediately to stop future charges.
- Save a screenshot of your subscription status and billing history.
How to request a refund
- Go to help.openai.com and open the chat support bubble.
- Say: "I was charged unexpectedly and would like a refund." Provide the charge amount, date, and your account email.
- Paid subscribers get human support. Free users may need to use the request form.
- If the bot can't help, say "Submit a support ticket" and fill out the form completely.
- Reference your billing screenshot in the ticket.
If OpenAI doesn't respond
If you don't receive a response within 48 hours or the charge isn't resolved: file a dispute with your credit card company. Explain the charge, attach your cancellation confirmation if you have it, and request a chargeback. Credit card companies routinely side with cardholders for subscription billing disputes. Note that disputing a charge while your account is active may result in account suspension.
Escalation that works
- File a complaint at bbb.org — OpenAI has to respond to BBB complaints.
- Post on community.openai.com with your ticket number.
- Tag @OpenAI on X with your ticket number — public posts with ticket numbers sometimes get faster responses.
Frequently asked questions
Will a chargeback get my OpenAI account banned?
Disputing a charge can result in account suspension, especially if the account is still active. Exhaust OpenAI's refund process first. If you've already lost access and can't get a response, a chargeback is your best option.
How long does an OpenAI refund take?
If approved, OpenAI refunds typically take 5–10 business days to appear on your statement.
I was charged by a third-party app that uses ChatGPT — is that OpenAI?
No. Apps built on OpenAI's API handle their own billing. Contact the app's support directly. OpenAI cannot refund charges made by third-party services.
