ChatGPT login loop won't let me access account

You enter your email and password, ChatGPT briefly shows the dashboard, then kicks you back to the login screen. Sometimes it cycles endlessly, sometimes it logs you out mid-conversation. This hits both free and Plus users, usually after a recent security update or when switching devices.

What's actually happening

The login loop happens when ChatGPT's authentication cookies or session tokens get corrupted, blocked, or invalidated. Your credentials work — OpenAI's servers recognise you — but the browser can't maintain the session long enough to keep you logged in.

Common triggers include aggressive privacy extensions blocking third-party cookies, VPN IP changes mid-session, or outdated browser caches holding conflicting authentication data. Sometimes OpenAI's session management system flags your account for security verification but fails to display the verification prompt, leaving you stuck in a redirect loop between login and the dashboard.

If you see a brief flash of your conversation history before being kicked out, the authentication completes but the session immediately terminates. That's different from a complete login failure — it means something's killing your active session within seconds of creation.

How to fix it

1. Clear ChatGPT-specific browser data

Don't just clear all browsing data. Open your browser settings, go to Privacy → Site Settings → View permissions and data stored across sites (Chrome) or Settings → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data → Manage Data (Firefox). Search for `chatgpt.com` and `openai.com`, then delete everything. Also delete `auth0.com` entries — that's OpenAI's authentication provider.

Close all ChatGPT tabs completely. Open a new incognito/private window and try logging in there. If it works, your regular browser profile has a conflicting extension or setting.

2. Disable privacy extensions temporarily

Turn off Privacy Badger, uBlock Origin, Ghostery, and any cookie blockers. ChatGPT requires third-party cookies from `auth0.openai.com` to maintain login sessions. You don't need to uninstall them — just disable for chatgpt.com in the extension settings.

In Chrome, go to Settings → Privacy and security → Third-party cookies → Allow third-party cookies on chatgpt.com. In Firefox, set Enhanced Tracking Protection to Standard instead of Strict.

3. Try a different browser entirely

If you're using Chrome, download Firefox or Edge. If the login works in a fresh browser, you've confirmed it's a browser-specific configuration issue. This also rules out account-level problems — if ChatGPT won't let you log in anywhere, that's a different issue covered in how to fix ChatGPT login failures.

4. Check for forced re-authentication

Sometimes OpenAI invalidates all active sessions after detecting unusual account activity. Log out completely (if you can reach the settings menu), wait 10 minutes, then log in again. If you're cycling too fast, their rate limiting might be blocking new session creation.

5. Disable VPN and change network

VPNs that rotate IP addresses mid-session will break authentication. Turn off your VPN completely and try logging in. If you must use a VPN, choose a static IP server location and connect before opening ChatGPT.

Switch to mobile data or a different WiFi network. Some corporate or university networks block the authentication endpoints ChatGPT needs.

If that doesn't work

You've likely hit an account-level security flag. Visit platform.openai.com and try logging in there — if you see "Access denied" or "Account suspended", contact OpenAI through their official help system at help.openai.com.

When you contact support, include:

  • Exact error message text (screenshot it if possible)
  • Browser name and version
  • Whether incognito mode works
  • Time when the loop started (approximate date/time)
  • Your ChatGPT plan type (Free, Plus, Team)

Response times average 2-4 business days. OpenAI doesn't offer live chat support. More details on the process at how to contact OpenAI support.

Questions people actually ask

Q: Will I lose my chat history if I clear cookies?

A: No. Your conversations are stored on OpenAI's servers, not in browser cookies. You'll see all your history once you log back in successfully.

Q: Does this mean my account is banned?

A: Not usually. Banned accounts get explicit "access denied" messages, not login loops. If you can briefly see the dashboard, your account is active.

Q: Why does this only happen on one device?

A: Each browser and device maintains separate session tokens. One can have corrupted authentication data while others work fine.

What to remember

  • Delete site data specifically for chatgpt.com, openai.com, and auth0.com — not all browser data
  • Third-party cookies must be enabled for ChatGPT authentication
  • Try incognito mode first to isolate whether it's a browser profile issue
  • VPNs with rotating IPs will always cause login loops
  • Contact OpenAI support if clearing data and trying different browsers doesn't work
