What's actually happening
When you log in to ChatGPT, OpenAI's auth servers create a session token and store it in your browser's cookies. If those cookies are blocked, corrupted or deleted mid-session, the authentication completes on OpenAI's side but your browser never receives confirmation. You end up in a loop: the server thinks you're logged in, your browser thinks you're not, and neither side breaks the cycle.
The most common culprits are browser privacy settings that block third-party cookies, extensions that interfere with authentication flows (especially ad blockers or privacy tools), or cached data from a previous broken session that conflicts with the new login attempt. Sometimes a VPN or corporate network blocks the specific domains OpenAI uses for authentication handshakes.
You won't see an error code in most cases. The page just reloads the login form as if nothing happened.
How to fix it
1. Clear your browser cache and cookies completely
In Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Clear browsing data → Time range: All time → tick "Cookies and other site data" and "Cached images and files" → Clear data.
In Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data → Clear Data → tick both boxes → Clear.

After clearing, close your browser entirely and restart it. Don't just close the tab — quit the application.
2. Disable browser extensions temporarily
Open an incognito or private window (Ctrl+Shift+N in Chrome, Cmd+Shift+N on Mac). Try logging in at chatgpt.com from there. If it works, an extension is blocking the auth flow.
Common blockers: uBlock Origin, Privacy Badger, Ghostery, any VPN browser extension. Disable them one by one on chatgpt.com and platform.openai.com, then test again.
3. Check your cookie settings
ChatGPT requires third-party cookies enabled. In Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Third-party cookies → select "Allow third-party cookies". In Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security → Standard or Custom (not Strict).
You can also whitelist specific OpenAI domains: chatgpt.com, auth0.openai.com, platform.openai.com.
4. Try a different browser or device
If you're stuck in Chrome, test in Firefox or Edge. If the loop persists across browsers on the same computer, try your phone or a different network. This tells you whether the issue is device-specific or account-specific.
5. Disable VPN or change network
If you're on a VPN, disconnect and try logging in directly. Some VPN IP addresses are flagged by OpenAI's fraud detection. If you're on a corporate or school network, those often block auth domains — switch to mobile data or home WiFi.
