ChatGPT login loop won't let me in
You click "Log in", enter your credentials, the page spins — then dumps you right back at the login screen. This redirect loop affects both chatgpt.com and the mobile app, usually after browser updates, cookie corruption or account verification issues.
What's actually happening
The login loop means ChatGPT's authentication system can't complete the handshake between your browser and OpenAI's servers. You're authenticated on OpenAI's side, but the session token never makes it back to your browser, so ChatGPT keeps asking you to log in again.
This happens for three main reasons. First, browser cookies are blocked or corrupted — ChatGPT stores your session in cookies under `chatgpt.com` and `auth0.openai.com`. If those domains can't write cookies, the login never completes. Second, aggressive privacy extensions or VPN exit nodes flag the authentication flow as suspicious. Third, your account might be in a pending verification state — OpenAI sometimes requires email confirmation or additional checks before allowing full access.
The loop looks identical whether you're stuck on the web app at chatgpt.com or the iOS/Android app. On mobile, you'll see "Log in with email" repeatedly even after entering your password correctly.
How to fix it
1. Clear ChatGPT cookies specifically
Don't clear your entire browser history. In Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Cookies and other site data → See all site data and permissions. Search for `chatgpt.com` and `auth0.openai.com`. Click the trash icon next to each. In Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data → Manage Data, then delete those two domains. In Safari on Mac: Preferences → Privacy → Manage Website Data, search and remove them.
2. Turn off all privacy extensions temporarily
Disable Privacy Badger, uBlock Origin, Ghostery, any VPN browser extensions and ad blockers. These often block the third-party cookies ChatGPT needs. Log in with everything off. If it works, re-enable extensions one at a time to find the culprit.
3. Try incognito/private mode
Open an incognito window (Ctrl+Shift+N in Chrome, Cmd+Shift+N on Mac). Go to chatgpt.com and log in. If this works, your main browser profile has corrupted data. You'll need to clear cookies as in step 1 or create a fresh browser profile.
4. Check email for verification requests
Open the email connected to your OpenAI account. Search for messages from `noreply@tm.openai.com` in the last 48 hours. If you see "Verify your email" or "Confirm your account", click that link before trying to log in again. Some users get stuck in a loop because their account verification expired.
5. Switch networks
If you're on a work or school network, try your phone's hotspot. Corporate firewalls sometimes block the authentication endpoints OpenAI uses. Mobile networks rarely have these restrictions.
6. Use the app instead (or vice versa)
If the web version loops, download the ChatGPT app from the App Store or Google Play. Log in there. If the app loops, go to chatgpt.com in a mobile browser. The platforms use different authentication paths — one often works when the other doesn't.
If that doesn't work
You're likely hitting an account-level block or a server-side issue. Go to platform.openai.com/account instead of chatgpt.com — this uses a different login flow. If you can access your account there, your ChatGPT access might be restricted. Check for any outstanding bills or policy notices.
Contact OpenAI support at help.openai.com. Submit a ticket under "ChatGPT" → "Login issues". Include your exact email address, the browser and version you're using, and the message "stuck in redirect loop after entering credentials". Don't send screenshots of the login page — they won't help. Response time averages 2-3 business days. For more details on reaching support, see how to contact OpenAI support.
If you haven't used ChatGPT in months, OpenAI may have locked older free accounts. You'll need support to reactivate it. This isn't documented anywhere, but users report it frequently.
Questions people actually ask
Q: Does clearing cookies log me out of everything else?
A: Only if you clear all cookies. If you delete just `chatgpt.com` and `auth0.openai.com` as described above, your other logins stay intact.
Q: Why does incognito work but normal browsing doesn't?
A: Incognito skips your saved cookies and extensions. That proves the problem is in your browser profile, not your account.
Q: I keep getting "Something went wrong" after the loop. What now?
A: That error means the authentication finally started but failed server-side. Wait 10 minutes, then try again. If it persists for over an hour, it's an OpenAI service issue — check status.openai.com.
What to remember
- Delete cookies for `chatgpt.com` and `auth0.openai.com` specifically — not your whole browser history
- Privacy extensions and VPNs cause most login loops — disable them temporarily to test
- Check your email for unclicked verification links from OpenAI
- Try platform.openai.com if chatgpt.com won't let you in — different login system
- Support tickets average 2-3 days, and you'll need your registered email address
